Music

Music at ISB strives to promote creativity and confidence in a nurturing and encouraging international environment. Pupils will engage with a diverse curriculum to explore the three main components of music in a progressive manner as they move up the school. These components consist of performing skills, appraising and composition within a wide range of projects, activities and pupil lead learning.

Each student will have the opportunity to learn and progress their performing skills on two musical instruments using a range of different genres and a variety of performing contexts, both individually and as part of music ensembles. Pupils will also focus on their knowledge and understanding of theoretical music in a creative and engaging manner, learning how to reflect on, analyse and evaluate a wide range of musical styles.

All of the skills are embedded into the music curriculum and used by pupils to create their own music compositions both individually, and in groups, being given the opportunity to perform their creations.

Students will be provided with performance opportunities in and out of class to encourage their self-confidence and resilience when performing as a soloist or as part of a group.

In order to meet these aims we will…

Create a progressive learning curriculum that provides the pupils with the skills and knowledge and understanding to achieve in music.
Focus on the fundamental note reading skills needed to perform on a variety of instruments.
Engage the learners with necessary knowledge and understanding skills through a range of projects and activities utilising cooperative learning in the classroom.
Ensure lessons are differentiated and catered to meet the needs of all learners in the classroom to access the full curriculum.
Equipped the pupils with different learning and practice strategies to ensure maximum individual development on their chosen instruments.
Utilise a wide range of historical and cultural topics to further progress the understanding of the music syllabus concepts.
Provide opportunity for creativity and expression when composing music from a wide range of topics.
Create cross curricular projects to further enhance the pupil's literacy and numeracy skills whilst further engaging the learners with cross contextual opportunities.
Provide opportunities for our pupils to perform and express themselves in a variety of genres and environments.

Students will be able to;

Confidently read music notation and identify musical concepts within the score.
Perform on two different instruments playing a variety of genres and styles as part of a group and as a soloist.
Identify a range of music concepts when score reading and listening to audio examples.
Engage with all learning in the classroom being able to work at a pace that best suits their needs whilst still being challenged.
Work independently and as part of a group to practice and rehearse productively utlising short and long-term goals.
Understand basic chord structures and music making within a variety of styles and genres.
Take advantage of different performing platforms to help build confidence and self-reflection skills.
Identify the level they are working at and next steps on how to improve, utilsing feedback given by the teacher and peers.
