• Nurture & encourage creativity and imagination through the use of stimulus, discussion, research and guided improvisation.

• Build confidence through performance, encouraging students to express themselves and the choreographic intention clearly and effectively.

• Promote healthy living and fitness through understanding the ‘Dancer in action’ through safe dance practice, warming up, cooling down and strengthening our physical skills

• Promote collaboration, communication and teamwork by students working collaboratively in groups, as a class and through problem-solving tasks.

• Develop empathy, compassion and emotional intelligence by exploring different characters, emotions, and real-life situations.

• Encourage active listening and effective communication skills through dialogue and interaction with peers.

• Provide a safe and supportive environment where students feel comfortable taking creative risks and expressing themselves.

• Enhance self-awareness and resilience, helping students reflect on their own emotions and responses within themselves and others.

• Cultivate a love for the arts and an appreciation for the breadth and depth of the language of Dance, through performance, choreography and analysing Dance works; broadening their knowledge and understanding of Dance through different styles and cultural influences.

• Support critical thinking and reflection, guiding students to analyse performances and make constructive feedback on themselves and others.

• Ensure inclusive participation, enabling all students to engage, regardless of ability or experience.

Students will be able to…

• Critically analyse, interpret and articulate the choreographic material of Professional Dance Works and the production choices made by choreographers and Artistic Directors to effectively communicate an idea, meaning or message behind the dance.

• Develop and refine their physical, technical and expressive skills to ensure high quality performances and effective communication of the choreographic intent.

• Develop confidence through regular participation in performances, gaining self-assurance within themselves and in front of an audience.

• Work collaboratively and inclusively, developing their listening, communication skills and emotional intelligence in group tasks and performances.

• Reflect, evaluate and apply feedback to improve their performance, demonstrating a willingness to refine and develop their skills.

• Respect and deepen their awareness and understanding of the different cultural, social and historical context of Dance, fostering an International and open-minded approach. 

• Understand the symbolism and effect of the technical elements of Dance, such as lighting, set design, costumes and props to enhance a performance.

• Develop written communication and articulate thoughts and insights effectively by applying their knowledge, understanding and interpretation through well-structured, analytical and detailed descriptions in their written exam and essay-style questions.

• Appreciate the beauty and power of Dance, in its many forms and styles, as a unique, varied and expressive artform that can effectively communicate, inspire and evoke emotion.
