Business (KS4 & Pre-U)

The intent of learning Business Studies at International School Brunei is to develop students' understanding of current and real-world business issues. Students taking Business Studies will develop their skills and ability to apply knowledge across the business world and apply what they learn to real-life situations.

The course encourages the effective use of business terminology, concepts, and methods, and use data to consider good decisions. Business studies also emphasizes understanding the perspectives of various stakeholders, such as, government, and individuals, and the impact of major organizations both within and outside the business world. Through this better understanding of global business we look to help our students become inspired and self-motivated in building their own futures.

Through this subject, students build skills in numeracy, literacy, and information analysis, develop an appreciation for innovation and change in business, and gain a strong foundation for further studies or careers in business-related fields.

In order to meet these aims we will…

Apply their knowledge and critical understanding to current issues and problems in a wide range of business contexts.
Make effective use of relevant terminology, concepts and methods, and recognise the strengths and limitations of the ideas used in business.
Distinguish between facts and opinions, and evaluate qualitative and quantitative data in order to help build arguments and make informed judgements.
Appreciate the perspectives of a range of stakeholders in relation to the business environment, individuals, society, government and enterprise.
Develop knowledge and understanding of the major groups and organisations within and outside business, and consider ways in which they are able to influence objectives, decisions and activities.
Develop knowledge and understanding of how the main types of businesses are organised, financed and operated, and how their relations with other organisations, consumers, employees, owners and society are regulated.
Develop skills of numeracy, literacy, enquiry, selection and use of relevant sources of information, presentation and interpretation.
Develop an awareness of nature and significance of innovation and change within the context of business activities.
Acquire a foundation for further study of business or other subjects.

Students will be able to;

Develop practical knowledge: To understand how businesses operate, finance, marketing and decision-making processes.
Prepare for future careers: Provides foundational knowledge for careers in business, entrepreneurship, management, finance, or marketing.
Encourage entrepreneurial thinking: Inspires students to think creatively and explore how to start and run their own businesses by developing problem-solving skills and opportunity recognition.
Build transferable skills: Develop skills like communication, critical thinking, data analysis for interpreting financial information and graphs. Make sound judgements and recommendations based on knowledge gained.
Support further education: Foundation for IB/A Levels in Business, Accounting or Economics.
Real-world application: Offers practical examples and case studies making it relatable to everyday life which encourages students to respond to challenges like competition and innovation.
